Two works from this series were chosen to represent Aotearoa / New Zealand photography in the world touring exhibition and publication Civilization: The Way We Live Now (2020).
The red meat industry in New Zealand comprises approximately 14,000 commercial sheep, beef cattle and deer farms and around 80 processing plants. Each year approximately 1.1 million tonnes of red meat export product worth NZ$5.7 billion is sent to over 120 markets. This represents 14% of New Zealand’s total merchandise exports and 26% of primary sector exports.
The slaughter chains and processing departments pictured process lamb, sheep, beef, goat, venison and bobby veal. They are from a single abattoir where about 1,500,000 animals are slaughtered annually.
